Dubspot: Max For Live: Sidechain any Device Control

Written by Admin on April 1st, 2010

This video shows a simple Max For Live Device which allows the user to control any device parameter in Live via volume level. Shown in the video are using a kick drum to modulate the FM amount in Operator, Triggering a reverb’s dry/wet controls from a drum loop and finally, using a synth’s LFO to change distortion controls. The device uses the new MFL object, live.remote~, to manipulate device controls at audio rate, which is much smoother than traditional 128 step midi resolution. Just want to mention that some of the controls in the video don’t run too smoothly, I believe that is because of the processing power that is needed to record the screen cast. When not screen recording the movement of the manipulated controls closely follow the level of audio sidechained to it

in fl you got some more ways to sidechain whatever you like :) take a look at the peak controller tool…

  3. SnakesMF says:

nice ;-) like you say, everything has his learning curve…i think, the apc is just as live is… its a physical copy of the programm. i think you couldnt missunderstand the apc, because its so simple, just as live is…simple as hell

  8. jonpaulevans says:

@GregorEicher I ‘ve been working with live and my APC and I’m getting the basics down – the tutorials built in are a huge help. that manual is intimidating. I understand the APC much more now

  9. GregorEicher says:

APC has nothing to do with max for live…the apc is pretty simple i think. when you understand live, than u understand apc…its too simple to missunderstand the apc ;)

you should throw a filter or comparator in after the level in.

  15. 4guns says:

Will you post the max patch?

  16. johnisfaster says:

Damn, an envelope follower is EXACTLY what I wanted from Max for live. I do this sort of thing in Guitar rig all the time, but this opens up way more possibilities because it is inside of Live. Thanks for posting.

looks like another fun gadget to dream about, thx. your vid is really quiet though

  21. mverzola says:

the sidechain is in need of an eq and attack/release…but it’s awesome either way.

  22. DubSpot says:

I don’t believe there is an official price yet…

    Cheers,
    Michael

any idea what max for live would cost, because my god it seems that Ableton Live is like the Mac in music production, its like Robert Henke, is Steve Jobs.
