Ableton Live DJ Setup Tutorial PT 1

Written by Admin on April 17th, 2010

This is a general description of how i have my Ableton Live DJ rig set up. I know i skipped a few details, but please send me a message/comment if you have any questions. There will also be several more videos that explain some of the more intricate details and functions of both the MPD16 and the NI Audio Kontrol 1, as pertaining to my setup. My “template” that i used in Ableton is based off of Joey Paranoia’s original, and will be explained, along with exactly how the “in/out” routing works between Ableton, the Audio Interface, and the DJ Mixer, later. This is Part 1.

Yo man…could you *pretty please* detail the settings in ableton for the channel you record your mixes to? I’ve got similar set up (audio mixer+AK1) and cannot get anything properly recorded (ie post mix w/ faders, kills, etc.) to land in live. Much appreciated!

I bought the audio interface Cakewalk UA-1G. But I’m wondering if its even possible to be able to DJ with it. I want to have the cue audio in my headset with the real music on the out. Is that possible?

  8. neros26 says:

thanks for the vidz…sooper good stuff. Question: how are you recording out from your mixer? It looks like you go out from denon into both line-ins on the AK1…are u recording to more than one channel in ableton? cheers…

Hey man, like the setup and the explanation. Does the recording of the set slow you down though?

THANK YOU for this vid my friend. I;ve been djing for a while with tt’s and serato. i;ve wanted recently to upgrade to cdj’s and djm mixer but its soooo god damn expensive; and in this day and age it seems mixing is obsolete. Why continue to worry about beat matching when a computer can do it for me and i can focus on other stuff? great vid and setup man, very helpful!! :)

It works just fine. Macs ARE nicer though. You’re not one of those computer-racists, are you?

    each channel of Ableton.

You will need an interface with at least 4 outputs, to create 2 stereo pairs. You can buy two 1/4″-to-RCA Stereo adapters, and put those between each single 1/4″ out and the stereo ins on an external DJ mixer, but you will “mono-fy” the sound. It will not be stereo, and you’ll lose all the panning and some of the character of the sound. On a 4-output interface, you just set up Abletons’ preferences for audio out to (1/2 stereo) and (3/4 stereo), then select which of these u want to use on

i have audio interface called an Alesis io2… it has a digital output.. midi ins n outs.. 1/4′ outputs for left and right speaker.. 2 xlr inputs.. 4 1/4′ inputs… and a headphone(monitor) output. how do i connect that into an analog mixer on live like you?

  17. PayolaParty says:

Hmm. Don’t know then. Just check the AKAI website for a driver that works, follow the installation procedures TO THE T! Do not have the MPD plugged in when you’re installing the driver!

  18. PayolaParty says:

…and a soundcard will help you with audio quality, as well as providing you with in/out capabitillty for “real” instruments. Which you can then use the MPD16′s actual MIDI port to control via the MIDI IN on the “real” instrument. If you want to. I like just using it for software control.

  19. PayolaParty says:

The MPD is just a MIDI controller. Unless you have it ‘controlling’ a software synth or software drum machine, you’re not going to get any sounds out of it. Try using it with a demo version of Ableton Live (downloadable from their website) to control the “Impulse” instrument or the “Sampler” instrument to get an understanding of how it works. Or use any different soft synth/drum machine with programmable MIDI routing to make sounds come out of your computer by pressing the pads…

Do you need a soundcard for the MPD 16 to work because my dad got me one and after we plug it in it will turn in but no sounds.

    Windows XP SP3

  22. PayolaParty says:

And what operating system are you using, btw?

  23. GaNgStAMP203 says:

Yeah thanks for the reply. Bsod is short for the blue screen of death in windows. Its basically when your screen turns blue with white writing indicating the whole system crashed. Your right they usually are shit it works well with other stuff tho. Well the driver was the whole problem causing it but maybe they did a more recent update to it thx for the response.

  24. PayolaParty says:

I just suggest ditching the USB-to-MIDI thing, those things are pieces of shit anyway, unhook your MPD, go to the AKAI website, and get the latest, current driver for the MPD16. They have it in there in some sub-menu you gotta kinda dig around for.

  25. PayolaParty says:

First, what is a “bsod”? I bought my MDP16 at a pawn shop, with no software discs whatsoever, no installation software or anything. I went to the AKAI website, and after some hunting around, i found the driver file, downloaded it to my desktop, and then ran and installed it. Now, it runs flawlessly, and the two different banks function just as designed.
