Mister Tim solo vocal “Live-Looping” demo May 2009: a cappella

Written by Admin on April 28th, 2010

Mister Tim demonstrating his all-vocal live-looping. Using just his voice and some convenient technology, Mister Tim performs full, multi-part songs live on stage. a cappella live looping one-man a cappella band FAQ: “I’m intrested in how these work. If you have recorded 6 loops for example, how does one remove 4 and 5 after that as he did on 2:20?” You’re only seeing 2/3s of the system, and the two songs I build are done slightly differently. The pedals shown are 1) Boss OC-2 Octavizer, makes notes sound an octave lower (I use if for the bass things) and 2) Digitech Hardwire DL-8 Delay/Looper. The first song (“A Loop is a Piece…”) is built just with the DL-8, basic overdub looping. What you don’t see is that I’m also running Ableton Live on my laptop, the same laptop that is filming the stationary shot (which is why you don’t see it … of course). Ableton Live allows me to mute/unmute, switch to a new loop and back again, and do all kinds of fancy tricks. The second song (which doesn’t have a name?) is done thusly. There are pedals that will allow you to store multiple sections, and to bring some layers in and out, but the DL-8 is not one of those. “What equipment should I buy to start live looping?” Difficult to say… there are many great, effective options. I recommend you start with a software-based looper – search on google, there are several good ones – that will give you an idea of how it works. Then, watch a lot of youtube videos, see what other people are

@jenrarr try different mics. different mics pic up sounds froun different directions, try getting one that mainly picks up sounds from the top.

Hi Tim, how do you avoid the problem of feedback using the loop pedal. No matter what I do… each time I do another loop over another loop.. more and more ‘unwanted’ sounds develop to eventually cause feedback.. I play in busy places with a lot of background noise.

Yep sir, octave pedal. That’s the second pedal you see. Drops the notes down an octave so I sound like a funky demon robot.
