Web: chriscaulder.net Twitter twitter.com YouTube: youtube.com Tumblr: chriscaulder.tumblr.com Hot-rodding the MPD32 to make the pads respond a HELL of a lot better (similar to Korg PadKontrol which have, without question, the best-responding pads on a drum pad controller). This video is for anyone who hates the response of their Akai MPD32 pads… but loves the MPD32 as a control surface. Now, I love both. This mod can be done on the MPD18, MPD24, MPD32, and according to someone on the Ableton Live forums, also on the Akai MPK49 (and possibly the MPK61, MPK88, too?) This mod works great, is easy to do… (it’s a bit tedious and time-consuming… unscrewing, keeping the circuitboards from coming separated… they’re basically attached at all times… just be careful)… and the response is unreal compared to the response when you first open the box. Akai, FIX THIS DESIGN FLAW! It’s the same issue with the newer MPC series! There are thousands of us out there who don’t bang on our MPCs or MPDs like they’re a real drumset! People like to tap lightly, and when we want to hit hard, we will. Hope this helps some of you out there.. if I wind up buying an MPK61 in the future (which I may do), I will do the same mod and put up another video. Good luck! And please don’t hold me responsible if you screw up your MPD… I doubt you will, if you’re careful.

This sound is very effective and quite common, This sound is heard in alot of dubstep songs, its quite basic but got a real punch to it. For those having trouble creating this sound due too different default settings, Here is the KSD patch that you should begin with www.filefactory.com
@NowNoon Nope.
im curious is the sticky part of the tape actually touching the sensor?
@chriscauldermusic @InLucidityMusic What about the cost of the electrical tape?… and maybe some sheets of cork if you want to be “legit”. They sell 1′ x 1′ sheets wherever there are scrapbooking supplies.
@InLucidityMusic This works the same and costs $0.00.
good video tho!!
MPCSTUFF.COM $45 will get you Fatty pads(50% thicker than the ones shipped on the unit) and pad corks that go under the pads . its the legit version of what this guy is doin. If you have the money no doubt go to mpcstuff!!
thanks for the vid man, i thought i was the only one with a busted mpd24!! this makes a lot of sense!!! but i got a question for ya…can i use any type of tape or just electrical tape? thanks a lot again…you made my day with this!
nice vid dude, i want to get a 32, dont feel the padkontrol has enough features for me, but if the pad suck when i get it, im gonna get the old tape out!!
So me and my brother both tried this on the mpd32 and now the light on the LCD won’t turn in can anyone help!
Calvin and Hobbes
I just bought a MPD18 and i noticed this on that controller as well That is strange because i also own the LPD8 and The MPK mini and both those controllers have excellent pads but as for the MPD18 is concerned you are right the pads suck.
Is that a monome in the background? Dope! I got a 40h kit a few years ago. Big ups!
Awesome VID! I’m gonna try this my MPK Mini! Thumbs up!
I dont understand how people get the original pads to be sensitive, the pads on my mpd32 succckkkkkeeed, so i went to mic stuff.com and got the fatty pads, now it’s to sensitive lol!
Calvin & Hobbes…….. Yeah!
@imperialshalom Korg PadKontrol. It just works, the pads have perfect sensitivity. Good luck!
I want to purchase an MPD for FL studios. I’m used to using the mouse but I started sampling a couple months ago and it won’t suffice for the beats I wan’t to make. I wan’t something simple to start off with with a good pad sensitivity. What would you suggest?
I also did this with the MPK mini, and have found that two layers of tape are enough. The feeling is much better than how it came from the factory. I do occasionally experience the pads “sticking” in the on position, which is a bit annoying.
Many thanks for taking the time to record and post this video. I’ve half finished doing the pads on my Akai MPKmini and the difference is amazing. Now I can lightly tap the pads with my little finger!!! I’ve posted a response to your video so that people can see the difference between modded and stock, and to show that your mod technique also works perfectly for the MPKmini
Cheers!
excellent video… I’ve just been trying to get back into pad drumming on my MPKmini and hate how I have to hammer the pads to even get *any* response… I feel like I need some drumsticks!!! will try this out and hopefully be able to tap out some beats rather than smack the hell out of them lol
great video thanks!
@Bigtimejonko yoooo I DID THE SAME THING. but i cant get the thing to turn back on now? i got everything plugged in i think, but the lcd doesnt light up at all when plugged in. FML. ive taken it back apart but i can’t find whats wrong. everythings plugged in i think.
@katmai539 hey man, just a simple loop and guitar note, pitched down… I chopped it up on my Korg PadKontrol and Ableton, and added a lot of reverb. Hope that helps!
‘sup chris i was wondering about the beat in the background? it massive.
@MrDirtyJoseph Too much tape perhaps or a misaligned circuit board… screws missing? I don’t know man, but as I’ve said in comments… do the mod at your own risk! Open up the MPD again and see what did you wrong.
@stephenm28 turn on the oscillators lol
@sxcking325 Check out my tracks.
Nice sound.
hey guys, today I’m going to show you how to use massive while mumbling and wasting your time………….

@Adqm100 - AND WHERE I DOWNLOAD THIS????
@OfficialRiZeMx you need to buy it, or download it.
Great video, although I would have also liked if you played the sound you were going for first, so that we don’t have to wait all the way to the end.
@Revvlo you have to chose monorotate for your voicing.
where can i find the massive?????
HOW DO YOU GET IT TO PLAY IN ONE MOTION???
Way to difficult for me to follow.
@Miroslawsnketr But you didn’t though so shut up
@Miroslawsnketr But you didn’t though so shut up
If your sound isn’t like his, its cause your Oscillators aren’t on, thumbs up so everybody can see.

Can it be becuase I couldn’t highlight the legato triller? Please respond so I can use this. It was a great turorial!
wow this is shit…
I don’t really get that guy above me (the second top comment). I was able to get the sound right ^_^
Thanks a ton man btw. Im using this for a senior project. I’ll credit you when i finish it. Also, i kind of tweaked the sound a bit by changing some things.
