Wiki Recording is a great site. Also, pick up a copy of the Mixing Engineer’s Handbook. You’ll want to know how to mix/EQ properly as it’s a big factor when we evaluate EDM tracks. Tweakheadz.com is another good site. You actually don’t learn that much about production from DJing, and it really isn’t remotely as easy as people make it out to be. If you work hard at it and use the technology to your benefit, you’ll be able to produce decent tracks, but I cannot guarantee they’ll be publishable. This industry is very competitive. We sort through millions of songs every year. Always look for ways to improve and stand out. I don’t care what people say to you or what you think of yourself. You are never better than anyone else. The jerks who try to screw each other over, bring down other producers that have worked harder than them, or boast their “super producing talent” simply because they “know” a famous producer are the absolute worst producers, and that’s something you probably won’t read in a book or website.

Regarding your studio tools selection: Ableton was a great choice. A lot of people here come asking about amateur programs like Audacity or GarageBand and realize they have to work five times as hard to get the same results you’ll get in Ableton.

We will look at the creative possibilities of using the Simpler, some portamento, LFO, and delays, and we’ll also explore a great technique for crafting 8 bar drum patterns. First up, I had the great pleasure of catching Dorian Concept’s insanely inspiring set at Low End Theory last week. Dorian Concept is a Vienna-based producer who has developed his own completely original style of keyboard playing. He’s been tearing it up at Festivals around the world since bursting on to everyone’s radar with the massive tune “Vertical Output” a few years back. His latest release on Ninja Tune is called Her Tears Taste Like Pears, full of funky, synth driven club heaters. He often sits in live improv style with his friend Flying Lotus when they cross paths internationally, and his series of YouTube videos ‘Fooling Around With The MicroKorg, Alesis Micron, etc’ are straight jaw droppers. So I had the honor of chatting with him at length at Low End, and I thought I’d share some tidbits from our inspiring conversation.
