In this tutorial we’re going to start to learn about the ableton live drum machine instrument called ‘impulse’. This is one of many drum machines that you can use in ableton live, and impulse is a good a place to start as any. We are going to learn how to load an instrument into the mixing area in order to make our own beats. We’ll be using the mouse to ‘draw’ in the beats during this tutorial. You will also learn how to open up the ableton live program and start to put into practice the things that were introduced in the first tutorial.

Beat Repeat is great in the studio for creating interesting drum fills. Using a simple drum loop, Nalepa demonstrates how Beat Repeat works, re-sampling the effected audio with all of its random variations, then mining those parts to give new life to your drum arrangements. He also shares a live performance technique using MIDI Mapping and the Beat Repeat’s Pitch Decay control.

How to use the Roland SPD S as a MIDI drum trigger input for Ableton Live Session Drums

Press the MIDI button, on the upper right of your screen, while you have an impulse kit open. You’ll see each drum pad highlighted in blue. Click on the bass drum, then on the trigger finger pad you want to use to control it. You’ll see a number corresponding to the midi output of that button. Continue for each drum.

Then make sure you either arm the channel that the impulse kit is on (make the grey button below the solo (S) button on the channel turn red” or change the input from ‘auto’ to ‘in.’

That should do the trick.
