What’s a great DJ setup?

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Question by Dexy Woodhead: What’s a great DJ setup?
I’m a producer that uses Ableton Live 8 on my MacBook Pro with an Akai MPK25 midi controller, some headphones and monitors. I’m interested in preforming music now but I’m not exactly sure how the whole process works. I’ve seen DJ/Producers like James Zabiela preforming with a mixer, CDJs and an FX unit and then I’ve seen deadmau5 just using an Allen and Heath Xone 4D mixer with an FX unit and a Lemur or iPad. deadmau5 claims not to be a DJ so is his method only useful for preforming his own music? I would like to mix other producer’s music along with my own. Is the mixer the only essential part to a DJ setup? or if I want to mix a variety of music will I need CDJs?
If I wasn’t to use CDJs how would I generate the music (from laptop with Ableton? or from a Lemur/iPad?) What are the pros and cons to either of these setups?

You can just use a laptop or you can use a laptop with a DJ controller (it controls the software and is a bit easier than controlling everything with a mouse). There are tons of options now and it can get confusing. Some CDJ’s play mp3 files some only play CD’s. If you already have lots of music on a laptop, you might just get DJ software and start with that. If you want to produce while you DJ, you will be better off with some type of controller and/or mixer.

Question by Element356: Home recording studio speaker setup?
I’m setting up a small home recording studio. I have two turntables a mixer, a set of monitor speakers, and midi controller for ableton live on my imac. How can i set up my speakers so i can hear sound from my imac and from my turntables? Can i run them both through the mixer then to the speaker and if so, what do I need to run the imac through the mixer.
The mixer is a Behringer DDM4000 and the speakers are M-Audio Studiophile AV40

Just get a standard 3.5mm stereo to RCA cord. Connect the 3.5mm headphone connector to the laptop headphone output and the RCA ends to the mixer:

Ableton Live Tips #10: DJ / Performance – Creating A Unique Setup (Dorian Concept)

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

More info – bit.ly In this Ableton Live video tutorial, we’ll explore some techniques inspired by two incredible conversations I had this past week. We will look at the creative possibilities of using the Simpler, some portamento, LFO, and delays, and we’ll also explore a great technique for crafting 8 bar drum patterns. First up, I had the great pleasure of catching Dorian Concept’s insanely inspiring set at Low End Theory last week. Dorian Concept is a Vienna-based producer who has developed his own completely original style of keyboard playing. He’s been tearing it up at Festivals around the world since bursting on to everyone’s radar with the massive tune “Vertical Output” a few years back. His latest release on Ninja Tune is called Her Tears Taste Like Pears, full of funky, synth driven club heaters. He often sits in live improv style with his friend Flying Lotus when they cross paths internationally, and his series of YouTube videos ‘Fooling Around With The MicroKorg, Alesis Micron, etc’ are straight jaw droppers. So I had the honor of chatting with him at length at Low End, and I thought I’d share some tidbits from our inspiring conversation. He shared some serious wisdom that would be helpful for any aspiring producer. Turns out he is not classically trained, and he’s actually completely self-taught. The great thing about what he has done, is that he has kept it simple and really mastered his instrument, developing his own unique style. With all the tools we have
