Check out the dubspot blog to learn more: bit.ly – In this video (part 2 of 3 focusing on Sidechaining in Ableton Live) Dubspot instructor and Ableton expert Steve Nalepa explains and demonstrates compression basics within the Compressor-Sidechain audio effect in Live. He explains Dynamic Range, or the ratio between the loudest and the quietest sounds. As he states in part 1, Sidechain Compression simply allows “different elements of your songs to essentially dance together.” Nalepa starts here by adding compression o the group tracks he created in part 1 (dubstep drum pattern with a simple kick and snare and some couple of synths.) Check out the full article: bit.ly In this video (part 1 of 3 focusing on Sidechaining) Dubspot instructor and Ableton Live expert Steve Nalepa shows how to use the Compressor-Sidechain audio effect in Ableton Live. Put simply, Sidechain Compression allows “different elements of your songs to essentially dance together.” Professor Nalepa starts by creating a simple dubstep drum pattern (kick and snare), adds a couple of synths which overpowered the drums, basically drowning the kick and snare. To remedy this imbalance, Nalepa select the synth tracks and grouped them together, and worked on the tracks/elements individually, reducing volume and adding effects. The popular effect has been used by a number of unique electronic and dance music producers from Daft Punk and Justice to newer artists like Baths and Nosaj Thing extraordinary results. Dubspot: Max For Live: Sidechain any Device Control

This video shows a simple Max For Live Device which allows the user to control any device parameter in Live via volume level. Shown in the video are using a kick drum to modulate the FM amount in Operator, Triggering a reverb’s dry/wet controls from a drum loop and finally, using a synth’s LFO to change distortion controls. The device uses the new MFL object, live.remote~, to manipulate device controls at audio rate, which is much smoother than traditional 128 step midi resolution. Just want to mention that some of the controls in the video don’t run too smoothly, I believe that is because of the processing power that is needed to record the screen cast. When not screen recording the movement of the manipulated controls closely follow the level of audio sidechained to it
