Developed in Spain by Austrian and Spanish music and media technologists, Reactable is a musical instrument that is changing the way modern electronic music is produced and performed. In this video recap of the live webcast, Peter Kirn asked the necessary question “what makes this an instrument?” and Martin Kaltenbrunner answered that question with a demonstration using Reactable’s tangible and intuitive interface to create and manipulate sounds on the fly. Furthermore, Peter and Martin talked about interface design, music technology, production and performance of electronic music without a computer, and much more.

Why does sound not work with Ableton Live 8 open?

Question by Matt: Why does sound not work with Ableton Live 8 open?
I have a couple of questions about this.
First of all, when I have Ableton open, I can’t hear anything else but Ableton. I can’t get anything else to make sound. So I close the program, but after I close it, it stays open in the background and I have to open the task manager and close the process.
Does anyone know why Ableton is causing the first problem and how I can get Ableton to close completely when I close it?
I have Windows 7 and when I used to have Ableton in Windows XP, I never had these problems.

it sounds like you need to change the defaults in the windows program, it is probably set as the default program for sound and that is why it stays open and nothing else will work

I’ve had this program for about two months. It was awesome for the first couple of weeks. I only get on it every once in a while because it’s very addicting, Now, when I’m on there, I can’t hear my music. I can see it playing but there’s no sound. My sound card is selected under preferences, my speakers work fine. What is the problem?

Question by whoisemjay: Could I use the built in sound card in my macbook to perform live on a professional sound system?
I’ve been using Ableton Live lately to DJ and manipulate tracks. When I’ve seen people preforming laptop sets they usually route sound through an external soundcard. If I plan to to use Live with a professional sound system (i.e. a small club setting), should I invest in an external sound card or would an 1/8th inch to RCA jack directly in to the mixer do the job?

If you are just starting out though, get the RCA output (it’s cheap), then consider an external sound device later. Don’t skimp on the cable, and be wary at places like Radio Shack, often times they provide a 1/8th to Mono, and depending on your mixes this may not be optimal.

You may find that the level out from your Macbook is a little low, forcing them to crank the mixer up for the house system, so give yourself extra time the first time around for a decent sound check.
