Question by : What do I need to get started using Ableton live?
I’m a beginner to this whole thing. I really would like to make some trance/dnb/dubstep music. I’ve played drums for years in bands and I was classically trained on the piano, so I have a very in depth knowledge of music theory. But I have zero knowledge in using programs such as reason, FL studio and ableton. I’m very interested in using ableton from what I’ve seen of it. I have a Macbook Pro. I’m wondering what version of the software should I consider (is the suite worth it for a beginner like myself?). Also, what else would I need to get started? Price isn’t really an issue (I’d like to keep it reasonable of course). I’d also like a recommendation for a good midi controller.
Keep in mind I’m a total beginner, so the information cannot be too basic
I’m pretty much just looking for the few things I need to get started, and the rest I intend to teach myself. Thanks

Definitely go for the Suite version of Ableton rather than the Live version. It’s no more difficult to get your head around. It’s just that it gives you a much better variety of effects, instruments and options in general. 8.1 or 8.2 is the latest version. We’ve all got to start somewhere and there’s not much better software available than Ableton Suite, even if you’re completely new to that side of music.
As for extras, an audio interface for your computer would be a good idea to achieve the best quality sounds. You don’t have to spend a fortune but you’ll certainly notice the improved results over your computers built-in soundcard. And a decent pair of headphones.
M-Audio are good for MIDI controllers. The Axiom 25 MKII is a fantastic piece of equipment. If you need more keys (which I doubt), have a look at the Oxygen 49. The Akai MPK25 is another great controller that’s worth checking out.
