I have been using Acid Pro 5, 6, for many years, and have recently got 7, so I’m pretty familiar with it’s capabilities. I also just recently got Abelton Live 8…
As far as I can tell, it really depends on how you want to use the programs. Live allows DJ style live performances, and is MIDI driven more so than Acid, so Live allows MIDI triggering to just about anything you need to trigger on the fly – and assigning is fast, since it uses a “MIDI learn” function. basically you click on the item, then press the MIDI button or key and it learns…
Acid Pro, however is phenomenal when creating music in a studio setting. Mixing MIDI Tracks and Audio tracks is seamless, but it’s a bit more mouse click based, and only the VST instruments can be controlled via MIDI and there is no native MIDI learn function… so far. Acid does supports MIDI transport, but I have not got it to work properly with my M-Audio Oxygen 61 due to the inability to assign transport controls on their own channel separate from the native channel I’m currently am using at that time. Haven’t tried yet with my Axiom 61, (it allows you to assign transport controls to a different channel, but that’s a hardware option built-in to the keyboard).
I use VST instruments, and bolt handle them in a similar fashion. You just have to have the VST instruments… Live comes with a decent starter instrument set, as where Acid Pro comes with many good VSTi program add-ons. Acid pro 6 came with Kontakt 2… one of the best VST/Standalone soft synths bundled with any DAW at that time.
Live takes a little bit of time to set up to recognize your MIDI controllers, but it’s worth every minute.
Both are great for creating MIDI Loops, that can be “cut n’ pasted”, manipulated, and transposed and incorporating .Wav data as well.
If you’re mixing together prerecorded loops, Acid is the way to go… but it may take the fun out of creating original music, unless you created the loops yourself. Acid now has a drum machine, or drum grid mode, where you can create your own beats. Kontakt 3, also uses a drum grid, that sounds awesome, and it can be used for both programs.
Acid is a build then listen program, as where Ableton Live can be used… live.
Watch the video to see Ableton Live being used live with an Axiom 49 MIDI controller keyboard.
